How to use the word unscrambler

Type the letters you have into the box. Results appear as you type, grouped by length with the longest words first, because those usually score best and solve puzzles fastest.

Add a question mark or a space for a blank tile. You can use up to two blanks, and any letter a blank stands for is underlined in the results and scores no points, just as it would on a board.

Open More options to narrow things down. Starts with, Ends with and Contains are handy when a word has to fit letters already on the board, and the length filter shows only words of the size you need.

Getting more from your letters

Look at the longest group first. A seven-letter word that uses every tile is worth a lot in most board games, and the list tells you straight away whether one exists.

If you are stuck on a rack full of vowels or consonants, check the two- and three-letter groups. Short words such as qi, xi and jo can be placed in tight spots and score well for their size.

Sort by points to find the best-scoring play rather than the longest one. High-value letters such as Q, Z, X and J often earn more in a short word on a premium square than in a long word elsewhere.

Choose UK, US or Both under Dictionary. UK hides American-only spellings like color, and US hides British-only spellings like colour, so the list matches the game or puzzle you are playing.

Where the words come from

The word list combines SCOWL, a well-known open English word list with separate British and American spellings, and ENABLE, a public-domain list long used for word games. Together they hold about 180,000 words from two to fifteen letters.

It is not an official tournament dictionary, so very occasionally a word accepted in a particular game will be missing, or the other way round. For casual games, puzzles and homework it covers the words you are likely to need.

Your letters never leave your device. The search runs in your browser, so it is quick and keeps working even if your connection drops once the page has loaded.

Questions and answers

How do I enter a blank tile?

Type a question mark (?) or a space. You can use up to two blanks. Letters that come from a blank are underlined in the results and count as zero points.

Why are some words missing that my game accepts?

Each game uses its own official dictionary, and those lists are not free to use. Our list is built from open word lists, so it matches most everyday words but can differ on rare ones.

What do the numbers next to each word mean?

They are points using the standard English tile values found in classic crossword board games, such as 10 for Q and Z and 1 for most vowels. Board bonuses like double word squares are not included.

Is there a limit on how many letters I can enter?

You can enter up to fifteen letters, which covers every standard rack and most puzzles. Longer inputs still work, but only words up to fifteen letters are shown.

Does it work offline?

Yes. Once the page and word list have loaded, searches run in your browser without contacting a server.
