Who we are
This website, unscramblewords4u.com (“Unscramble Words 4U”), is run by Mark Davies (47 Ravenswood Road, London SW12 9PN), an individual based in England, United Kingdom (“we”, “us”). We decide how the small amount of information described here is used, so under data protection law we are the “controller”.
You can contact us about anything in this policy by email at info@unscramblewords4u.com.
This policy explains what information is involved when you use the site, why, and what choices and rights you have. We have tried to write it so that everyone, including children, can understand it. If anything is unclear, please ask us.
What you type into the tools
The unscrambler, anagram solver, word finder, crossword solvers, word search maker, code and cipher tools, Morse code translator and our other tools all run in your own browser. When a page loads, your browser downloads the word list it needs, and every search happens on your device after that. The letters, patterns, clues and text you type are not sent to us and are not stored on our server.
- Crossword photos. If you choose a photo of a crossword grid in the crossword helper, the picture is read by your browser on your device. It is not uploaded.
- Microphone (Morse code decoder). The “Listen” mode only uses your microphone after you press “Start listening” and your browser asks for your permission. The sound is analysed in your browser to pick out Morse code. It is never recorded, saved or sent anywhere. It stops when you leave the page.
- Sharing a Morse code message. If you press “Share link”, your message is put into the link after a # sign. Browsers do not send that part of a link to our server, but anyone you give the link to can read the message.
- Downloads. Morse code sound files and word search puzzles are made in your browser and saved straight to your device.
Playing hangman against the computer
In hangman you can guess the computer’s word, or let the computer guess yours. When the computer guesses, you think of a word and tell it how many letters it has, then show it where its guessed letters go. If it gets stuck, you can type in your word to tell it the answer.
All of this happens in your browser. Your word, your answers and the computer’s guesses are not sent to us and are not saved. The computer chooses its guesses from the word list your browser has already downloaded. There are no other players, no chat and no leaderboards.
Your scores (games played and won, and your best streak) are saved only on your own device, so that you can see them next time. We cannot see them. See Information saved on your device.
Information saved on your device
To remember your choices, such as your language, your dictionary (UK, US or both) and your hangman scores, our pages save small pieces of information in your browser’s local storage. This stays on your device. It is not sent to us and we cannot read it. It stays until you clear it.
The site itself does not set any cookies. The full list of what is saved, and how to clear it, is on our cookies and local storage page.
Server logs
Our website is hosted by GoDaddy on its cPanel web hosting service. Like almost every web server, it keeps standard logs of the requests it receives. A log entry usually includes your IP address, the date and time, the page or file asked for, the website that sent you (if any), and your browser and device type.
These logs are used to keep the site secure (for example to spot and block attacks), to fix problems and to understand how much the site is used. We do not use them to work out who you are, and we do not combine them with other information. Our host keeps them for a limited period that it sets, and then deletes them.
Advertising
The site is free because it shows adverts. Adverts on this site are provided by Google AdSense.
- Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website or other websites.
- Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and/or other sites on the internet.
- You may opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google’s Ads Settings (adssettings.google.com). You can also opt out of some other companies’ use of cookies for personalised advertising at www.aboutads.info.
- Read How Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services.
Your consent. If you visit from the UK, the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland, a consent message from Google, a Google-certified consent management platform, asks for your choice before any advertising cookies are used. Personalised ads are only shown if you agree. If you don’t agree, Google may show non-personalised ads, which are based on things like the page you are looking at and your general location (such as your country or city), not on your browsing history. Depending on your choices, Google may show “limited ads”, which use no cookies at all. You can change your choice at any time with the Privacy and cookie settings link at the bottom of every page.
What Google receives. When an ad loads, your browser connects to Google, which receives information such as your IP address, browser details, the page you are on and, if you agreed, cookie identifiers. Google uses this as an independent controller under its own privacy policy. We do not give Google anything you type into our tools.
Children and ads. We do not knowingly target ads at children. See Children.
Links to other websites
Many words in our results link to Wiktionary, a free dictionary run by the Wikimedia Foundation, so you can look up what they mean. Our licences and word list pages link to the projects our word lists come from, such as GitHub. If you follow a link, the other website receives your visit and its own privacy policy applies, for example the Wikimedia Foundation privacy policy. Adverts also link to other websites.
If you email us
If you email us, we receive your email address, your message and anything else you choose to include. We use them only to reply and to help with what you asked, such as adding a missing word or fixing a bug. We keep emails only as long as we need them, normally no longer than 12 months, unless we need to keep one longer to deal with a legal claim. Please don’t send us more personal information than you need to.
Children
Lots of people who use this site are children, for example playing hangman or doing spelling homework. We have tried to make the site safe and private for you, with the most private settings already switched on:
- You don’t need an account. We never ask for your name, age, email address, school or where you live.
- What you type into the tools and games stays on your device. We don’t see it.
- Your hangman scores stay on your device. Nobody else can see them, and we can’t either.
- There is no chat, no messaging, no other players, no public scores and no location tracking.
- We don’t sell or share information about you, and we don’t build profiles of you.
- Adverts: the site shows ads to pay for itself. We do not knowingly target ads at children. In the UK, EEA and Switzerland, ads based on what you have looked at on other websites (personalised ads) only appear if someone agrees in the consent message. If you are a child, ask a parent or carer before you agree to anything. It is fine to say no, and the tools work just the same.
- Adverts and links can take you to other websites. Ask a grown-up before you buy anything or type in information about yourself on another website.
We have designed the site with the UK Information Commissioner’s Age Appropriate Design Code (the Children’s code) in mind: we collect as little as possible, keep privacy high by default, don’t use nudges to make you share more, and don’t share children’s information.
For parents and carers, and US visitors: we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 (or any other age). If you think a child has sent us personal information, for example by email, contact us and we will delete it.
Our reasons for using information (lawful bases)
| What | Why | Lawful basis under UK GDPR and EU GDPR |
|---|---|---|
| Server logs | Keeping the site secure and working | Legitimate interests: running a safe, reliable website |
| Settings and scores in local storage | Remembering choices you make | No personal information reaches us. This storage is allowed without consent because it only makes features you use work |
| Personalised ads and advertising cookies | Paying for the site | Your consent, given in the consent message (UK, EEA and Switzerland) |
| Non-personalised ads | Paying for the site | Legitimate interests. Where these use cookies, for example to limit how often you see an ad or to prevent fraud, they are covered by the consent message |
| Emails you send us | Replying to you | Legitimate interests: answering your question or request |
Who we share information with
We don’t sell personal information and we don’t share it with anyone except:
- GoDaddy, our web host, which stores the site and its server logs for us.
- Google, which provides the adverts and the consent message, as described above.
- Anyone we must share with by law, for example the police with a valid legal request.
Information outside the UK
Google and our web host may process information outside the UK and the EEA, for example in the United States. When that happens, it is protected by UK and EU adequacy arrangements (such as the UK–US data bridge and the EU–US Data Privacy Framework) or by standard contractual clauses approved for that purpose.
Your rights
Under data protection law you have the right to:
- access the personal information we hold about you;
- have it corrected if it is wrong;
- have it deleted;
- restrict how we use it;
- object to us using it, including where we rely on legitimate interests;
- data portability: get it in a format you can take elsewhere;
- withdraw your consent at any time, for example to personalised ads, using the Privacy and cookie settings link.
To use any of these rights, email info@unscramblewords4u.com. It is free, and we will reply within one month. Because we don’t have accounts, we usually hold nothing that identifies you. If you ask about server logs, telling us the date, time and IP address of your visit helps us find them. For information Google holds, you can also use Google’s own tools, such as myaccount.google.com.
Wherever you live, you can ask us what information we have about you and ask us to delete it.
Complaints
If you are unhappy with how we have used your information, please tell us first and we will try to put it right. You also have the right to complain to the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO): ico.org.uk, phone 0303 123 1113. If you live in the EEA, you can complain to the data protection authority in your country.
The laws we follow
We follow the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018, the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR) as amended by the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025, and, for visitors in the EEA, the EU General Data Protection Regulation (EU GDPR).
Changes to this policy
We will update this policy if the site or the law changes. The date at the top shows when it last changed. If we make a big change, for example to what we collect, we will also say so on the site.
