What is a jumble? It is a word puzzle in which each line is an ordinary word with its letters scrambled. You unscramble every word, then take the letters in the circled squares and rearrange them to answer a final riddle, usually a pun that fits a cartoon. Each scrambled word normally has just one everyday answer.
How a jumble puzzle works
Newspaper jumbles have been popular for decades and still appear daily in print and online. The format is simple:
- You get four (sometimes more) scrambled words. Each one unscrambles to a single common English word.
- Some squares in each answer are circled.
- The circled letters together are a new scramble that answers a riddle, usually shown with a cartoon and blanks for the answer.
The word “jumble” is also used more loosely for any scrambled-word puzzle, including the word jumbles in children’s puzzle books and classroom worksheets. The method below works for all of them.
Step 1: solve the easy words first
Scan all the lines before starting and do the ones that leap out. Early wins give you circled letters, and those letters often hint at the final answer.
Try these four (they are our own, not from any newspaper):
KCIRT DLOWR CKATEP NOGRAE
- KCIRT: the CK pair and TR at the start give TRICK.
- DLOWR: one vowel and four consonants; W and OR suggest WORLD.
- CKATEP: CK again, plus -ET at the end, gives PACKET.
- NOGRAE: ORANGE. These letters also make ONAGER (a wild ass), but jumbles use everyday words, so ORANGE is the one.
Solve all four at once in the jumble solver. It lists the more common word first on any line with two answers.
Keep a note of how many letters each answer has as you go. Jumble words are usually five or six letters long, and the answers are ordinary words you would use every day, so if you find yourself reaching for an unusual word, look again.
Step 2: use the usual unscrambling tricks on the hard ones
- Endings: look for -ING, -ED, -ER, -LY and -Y, and set them aside.
- Pairs: TH, CH, SH, CK, QU and doubled letters are strong clues.
- Vowel count: few vowels means a short, consonant-heavy word such as RHYTHM or GLYPH.
- Circle trick: write the letters in a circle so the given order stops misleading you.
Our guide on how to unscramble words goes through these in more detail.
Step 3: crack the final riddle
Once your words are in, copy the circled letters onto a scrap of paper. Then:
- Count the blanks. The answer pattern, such as (3, 5), tells you how many words and how long each is.
- Read the cartoon and caption. The answer is almost always a pun on a phrase connected to the picture.
- Look for small words. Phrases often contain A, AN, THE, OF, IN or IT; finding one shrinks the problem.
- Use a two-word anagram search. Type the circled letters into the anagram solver and press the two-word button to see phrases that use every letter.
If the final answer will not come, double-check your words. A single wrong answer adds a wrong letter to the circled set, and then nothing fits.
Common jumble mistakes
- Choosing the rare word. When letters make two words, the puzzle wants the familiar one.
- Using a letter twice. Every letter is used exactly once; cross them off as you go.
- Forgetting plurals and tenses. Jumbles sometimes use words like WALKED or BOXES, not just base words.
- Ignoring the cartoon. The picture is a clue, not decoration.
Jumbles, anagrams and word scrambles: what is the difference?
All three involve rearranging letters, but the puzzles ask slightly different things:
- A jumble gives you scrambled words that each have one everyday answer, then a final riddle made from some of the letters.
- An anagram is any word or phrase made from all the letters of another, and a set of letters can have several anagrams. Anagram clues are common in cryptic crosswords.
- A word scramble or unscramble game often lets you make any words you can from the letters, long or short, as in tile games.
The same skills help with all of them, so practice on one makes you faster at the others. If you only need one answer per line, the jumble solver is quickest; for every word the letters can make, use the unscrambler.
Making your own jumble
Jumbles are easy to make for a classroom, party or quiz. Choose four common words with five or six letters, scramble each so no part of the original word is left in order, and circle letters that spell your final answer. Check each scramble in the jumble solver to make sure it has only one sensible answer.
Questions and answers
What is a jumble puzzle?
A jumble is a word puzzle of scrambled words. You unscramble each word, then rearrange the circled letters from your answers to solve a final riddle, usually a pun linked to a cartoon.
Do jumble words always have one answer?
They are chosen to have one everyday answer. Some letter sets also make rare words, but the common word is the one the puzzle wants.
How do you solve the final jumble answer?
Collect the circled letters, count the blanks to see the word lengths, read the cartoon for the theme, and look for a pun. A two-word anagram search can help.
Why will my circled letters not make an answer?
Usually one of the word answers is wrong, which adds a wrong letter to the final scramble. Re-check each line before trying again.
