How to use the Wordle solver
Type the five-letter word you guessed and press Add. It appears as a row of tiles, all grey to start with. Tap each tile until it shows the same colour as in your game: grey for a letter that is not in the word, yellow for a letter that is in the word but in a different place, and green for a letter in the right place.
The list underneath updates straight away. Possible answers shows every word that fits all your rows, with the most common words first, because daily puzzles almost always use everyday words. Add your next guess the same way and the list keeps shrinking.
You can add up to eight rows, remove one with the cross at its end, or press Clear to start again. Nothing you type leaves your device: the search runs in your browser.
How the best next guesses are worked out
For each candidate guess, the solver plays it against every word that still fits and counts how the colours would split them into groups. A good guess splits the list into many small groups, so whatever colours you get back, only a few words are left. The number shown is the average number of words a guess would leave, so lower is better.
Words marked as possible answers could also win the game outright. When two guesses are about as good, it is usually worth playing the one that could be the answer. Tick Hard mode to see only guesses that use everything you have found so far, as the game’s own hard mode requires.
Repeated letters are handled the way the game handles them. If you guess a word with two Es and only one turns yellow, the solver knows the answer has exactly one E.
Tips for solving in fewer guesses
Start with a word that uses five different common letters, such as one of the suggestions shown before you add any rows. Letters like E, A, R, O, T, L, I and S appear in a lot of five-letter words, so they tell you the most.
Do not chase the answer too early. If four letters are green and there are still six words that fit, a guess that tests several of the missing letters at once can be safer than trying the candidates one by one.
Keep Common words only ticked for daily puzzles. Untick it for games with bigger word lists, or if the answer turns out to be an unusual word. The Dictionary box lets you switch to UK or US spellings, or to a word list in another language for Wordle-style games in that language.
Questions and answers
How do I enter yellow and green letters?
Add your guess, then tap each letter tile. One tap turns it yellow, two taps green and three taps back to grey. Match the colours your game showed.
What does “leaves about 12 on average” mean?
If you played that word next, it would leave about 12 possible answers on average, depending on the colours you got back. The fewer words a guess leaves, the more it tells you.
Does it handle words with double letters?
Yes. The solver colours each word exactly as the game does, including repeated letters, so a grey second copy of a letter correctly means there is only one.
Is this the official Wordle answer?
No. We do not know the daily answer. The solver only shows words from our open word list that fit the colours you enter, so it works for past, present and practice puzzles alike.
Is this site connected to Wordle or The New York Times?
No. Wordle is a trademark of The New York Times Company. This is an independent helper tool and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by The New York Times.
